Diversity and multi-disciplinarity are a necessary condition for innovation. For 21st century engineers, the ability to combine knowledge and research results from different disciplines, multi-disciplinary research, and the skills to operate in teams of people with diverse backgrounds are becoming more and more important. At the same time, we are witnessing an extremely fast development of online and digital education. Today, thanks to the capabilities of smart phones and extremely rapid Internet developments, knowledge is available anytime and anywhere. This poses great challenges and opportunities and raises an important question for engineering education as we know it today: how should we reshape our education, making optimal use of the online and on-campus activities, in order to produce diverse and innovative engineers?
In this talk I will share my ideas on this topic, describe my experience with hybrid on-line/on-campus teaching forms like blended learning and discuss the change of educational paradigm we need to undertake in order to deliver truly diverse, multi-disciplinary and innovative engineers.
