Machiel Keestra ( http://www.uva.nl/en/profile/m.keestra ) is assistant professor with tenure at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Amsterdam. With a background in philosophy and psychology and a PhD in the philosophy of cognitive neuroscience, he teaches in the Beta-Gamma (Natural & Social Sciences) Bachelor program, Interdisciplinary Honours program, Brain and Cognitive Sciences Master program, and other interdisciplinary courses. His research interests are a.o. tragedy, history of philosophy, philosophy of action and the philosophy of cognitive neuroscience. His “Sculpting the Space of Actions. Explaining Human Action by Integrating Intentions and Mechanisms” (ILLC, Amsterdam 2014) covers the overlap between philosophy of science, cognitive neuroscience, hermeneutics and ethics and presents a novel framework for the interdisciplinary explanation and understanding of human action.
Keestra is member of the Amsterdam Brain and Cognition center and of the research group ‘Neuroaesthetics and Neurocultures’ and has been President of the International Association for Interdisciplinary Studies 2014-2016.
Last year appeared the co-edited and co-authored textbook ‘An Introduction to Interdisciplinary Research: Theory and Practice’ (eds. Menken & Keestra, Amsterdam University Press 2016).
